Is Salsa Keto Friendly?

Due to the tomatoes used in salsa people are often under the impression that salsa is not keto-friendly. Tomatoes, which are technically a fruit, and not a vegetable are keto-friendly.

In 100 grams of tomatoes, there are approximately 4 grams of carbs and 2.6 grams of sugar.

This means that tomatoes in moderation are keto-friendly.

You have to be careful with shop-bought tomato-based sauces (including salsas) as these often have sugars added as preservatives as well as to ‘balance’ out the acidity in the tomatoes

That’s why homemade is always best

Fresh salsa comes in a lot of different forms, some with more onion, others more tomato-based. A lot of shop-bought salsas will be in a slightly thickened tomato juice/sauce, with added sugar, for a tablespoon, they will have around 4 grams of carbs.

This recipe has around 4 grams of carbs per 100 grams – meaning you get a lot more food, without blowing your carbs!

Making your Simple Keto Salsa

I saw one of these little choppers recommended by somebody on a Facebook group. I was really skeptical that it was the latest ‘fad’ kitchen gadget, that I would use once and then put in the back of the cupboard never to be used again.

Despite my skepticism I bought this anyway – and how wrong I was! I use this every week without fail – not only do I use this for my salsa. I also use it to chop nuts for my keto granola.

Both of these are staples in my keto diet. This gadget has not only saved me so much time every week but it’s also saved my nails that I inevitably would cut into every time I tried to finely chop nuts or salsa

What goes into Simple Keto Salsa?

There is a simple answer to this – everything that goes into ‘normal’ salsa!

I just mix up the quantities a bit to lower the number of carbs! I up the cucumber and lower the number of tomatoes to reduce the carb content. Another option is to switch out the red onion for spring onions (scallions). I like to mix this up each time i.e I use what I have in the fridge at the time!

How long will your Salsa last?

If this is stored in the fridge in an airtight container this keto salsa should last 4-5 days. Making it perfect to have with dinner one night, with a salad for work another day, and then as a dip with your favorite keto crackers or pork rinds another day!

This may be a bit of work to make initially, however, if you box clever you can make it once and eat it in different ways throughout the week.

Planning can be your best friend on keto!  This also means that if you know you are going to be running short on time, you can always make this in advance.

Mixing it up

Trying to save on the carbs

If I am running short of carbs, I will bulk this out with some finely chopped cucumber or celery. These are both low in carbs making them perfect to ‘bulk’ out recipes. I’m sure there is a Mexican mama rolling in her grave at me even typing that!

Want to spice things up?

If you fancy something a bit spicier you can finely chop a red chili into your salsa. This gives it a lovely kick.

What can I serve my salsa with?

As already discussed above – this fresh salsa teams perfect with any spicy Mexican recipe. However, this also stands well on its own as a snack, with either keto crackers or celery sticks. It never disappoints!

There are so many options, I honestly don’t know where to start! It adds lovely color and moisture to any meal.

Below are some of my favorite options;

  • Paprika Grilled chicken breast and salsa (this compliments the smokiness of the paprika perfectly!)
  • Steak and salsa (this is heavenly! – the meatiness of the steak with the freshness of the salsa is amazing!)
  • BBQ anything and salsa! Again, the freshness of this salsa goes well with anything that is BBQ’s
  • Salad and Salsa. Again, I love the freshness of this in with my leafy green salad, it also adds nice moisture, meaning I don’t need to add dressing to my salad
  • Nachos and Salsa. Of course!! Nachos and Salsa are a match made in heaven!
  • Any Mexican dish! Of course
