What exactly is Keto Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof Coffee / BP Coffee/butter coffee/keto coffee, it has many different names!

Bulletproof coffee is the trade name as you can buy this in stores. I have tried this, and it is amazing, however, you can easily make your own at home with a few common keto ingredients.

What is in Keto coffee? [How Is It Different]

Keto coffee is made with full fat, full taste ingredients. The full-fat content provides you with energy to get you through the day.

A lot of people, including me, will have this as a keto breakfast replacement. This makes me feel full until lunch and provides me with the energy I need to tackle whatever life throws at me.

I have this on days I am at work. This is something that I can make in advance and take in a travel mug to take work.

I then sip it over the first couple of hours at work, it is like a little piece of heaven in my day!

This keeps me full up until lunch and, although I was initially skeptical – I really do feel more focused at work and as if I am more productive (my manager may disagree!).

Why is it called Bulletproof coffee?

The creator, David Asprey, found the recipe while hiking in Tibet. As part of a quest to improve his wellbeing, he went to Tibet to learn how to meditate.

During a trek in the mountains, he was offered a cup of tea infused with yak butter. Native to the Himalayas, the yak is a long-haired relative of the bison and buffalo.

After I drank it I noticed my brain felt much better than it had in a long time, even though I should have felt bad at that elevation“, he says.

After returning home to California, Mr Asprey started experimenting to make his own version of the drink, and Bulletproof coffee was born.

Can I make Keto Coffee with instant coffee?

Coffee connoisseurs will probably want to brew their own coffee first and then add the additional ingredients.

As much as I do love a good fresh brewed coffee, instant coffee works perfectly fine for me in this keto bulletproof coffee.

Can I use coconut oil in my Keto Coffee?

Coconut oil is made up of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Since coconut oil is a three-chain fatty acid, the liver processes it into energy instead of its being stored as fat.

So putting it in coffee gives you even more of an energy boost.

Try to use cold-pressed coconut oil where possible as this is the best quality. Over the last several years coconut oil has become popular so you can get it in most shops.

What are the benefits of keto coffee?

  • Increased Energy

As discussed above, coconut oil is a three-chain fatty acid (MCTs); the liver processes this into energy instead of its being stored as fat.

This means that adding coconut oil into coffee gives you an energy boost to get you through the morning. Let’s face it, most of us need this!

  • Increased Metabolism

MCTs in coconut oil can help speed up your metabolic rate. Since your energy levels are increased, your body is also able to burn fat much easier.

This is great if you are already in ketosis and therefore burning fat anyway, it just gives your fat burning a little boost!

  • Decreased Appetite

Weight loss may be another benefit of drinking bulletproof coffee. Coconut oil makes you feel fuller, as you are feeling full, you are less likely to overeat. I can testify to this.

Keto coffee keeps me going until lunch. As a person that always had to eat breakfast, followed by a mid-morning snack, not eating until lunch would have been alien to me pre-keto and pre-bulletproof coffee.

  • Improve Immune System

Coconut oil’s fatty acids have been found to be effective in fighting against intestinal infections and various viruses. I can’t back this up with any science, but since doing keto, I have definitely seen an improvement in my immune system.

I don’t seem to get as many pesky colds as I used to. Before I would get a few a year, now, I can’t even remember the last time I got a cold of felt ‘off’!

It’s certainly not a vaccine for all ailments, but if you live a busy life, and do not have time for a cold, this is a great option for you!

How many carbs in Keto Coffee?

Here’s the best bit – there are 0 carbs in this keto bulletproof coffee and around 25 grams of fat. This makes it a great option if you are struggling to reach your fat macros.

How do I make my coffee?

If you are using freshly brewed coffee – brew this first and then add your coconut oil and butter.

If you are using instant coffee, add all of the ingredients into a mug and then stir until all of the ingredients are well mixed. If you like your coffee a little sweeter feel free to add stevia or erythritol to taste.

Can I add flavor to my coffee?

You can add flavors to your coffee. I like to do this to mix it up.

Check out some of my favorite sugar-free, coffee flavors;

Hazlenut

Vanilla

Chocolate (to create a mocca taste)

Chocolate Orange

Gingerbread (this is my winter favorite!!)
